Who We Are
Lynn M. Dunston, CFP® | Founder & Senior Wealth Planner
Lynn brings to Dunston Financial Group more than fifteen years of experience in the investment and financial planning industry. Lynn began his career as a manager with the self-directed retirement plan custodian, Lincoln Trust Company in Greenwood Village, CO. While at Lincoln Trust, Lynn assisted traditional clients with their retirement and investment needs, and he also worked with non-traditional clients who were interested in unique retirement plan investments, such as private placements, real estate, hard assets, promissory notes, and limited partnerships. Becoming the youngest manager in the company, Lynn managed the second-highest revenue producing department in the company.
Lynn continued his career as a manager and financial advisor for the Denver office of Boston-based New England Financial (NEF). While at NEF, Lynn specialized in working with small business owners and Colorado state government employees who were members of Colorado Public Employees’ Retirement Association (PERA).
After spending several years with New England Financial, Lynn met the rigorous Exam, Ethics, Experience, and Educational requirements to become a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ practitioner, after which he co-founded Madison Financial Partners, LLC (Denver, CO). Madison Financial Partners specialized in providing private wealth management, financial planning, and business succession services to more than 300 high-net-worth individuals and families.
In addition to working as a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ practitioner for his own clients, Lynn worked for many years as an independent investment and retirement plan consultant for the $300 million government trust fund, the Housing Agency Retirement Trust (HART) in Louisville, KY. While consulting for HART, Lynn assisted the executive board and their more than 6,000 clients with investment and retirement planning needs.
Lynn studied business finance at Metropolitan State College and Regis University. After earning his undergraduate degree magna cum laude, Lynn went on to obtain advanced masters degrees at Gordon-Conwell (magna cum laude; South Hamilton, MA) and Harvard University (Cambridge, MA) where he studied at the Harvard Kennedy School of Public Policy, the Divinity School, and the Faculty of Arts and Sciences. Lynn was then offered full-ride Ph.D. scholarships at Edinburgh University and the University of St. Andrews in Scotland, and Lynn continued his work in academia as a doctoral researcher at the University of St. Andrews. Lynn’s professional and research interests relate not only to his desire to help his clients with wealth management and financial planning, but also to the ways in which those disciplines more broadly intersect with issues of politics, ethics, economics, and even religion. By grounding his work in broader academic theory, Lynn is uniquely suited to help his clients with not only the concrete realia of their personal financial situation, but also with the deeper values that often undergird and influence his clients’ personal financial decisions.
INTERESTS & COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT
Outside of work, Lynn enjoys spending time with his two-year-old daughter and his wife, Natalie. Lynn also loves the outdoors, and he enjoys ultra-marathon trail running, mountain biking, and road cycling. Giving back to the community is also important to Lynn. He has served as a board member for the non-profit, Smart Girl, Inc., an organization committed to helping young girls make smart choices. Lynn also regularly serves underprivileged youth by taking them on mountain bike rides for the non-profit organization Trips for Kids Denver/Boulder. As a member of the Colorado Latino Forum (CLF), the Colorado Hispanic Bar Association (CHBA), and the Denver chapter of the National Association of Hispanic Real Estate Professionals (NAHREP), Lynn is also committed to increasing the political, social, educational and economic strength of Latinas and Latinos in Colorado. Lynn is also a proud member of the premier association of Fee-only financial planners, the National Association of Personal Financial Advisors (NAPFA).
